What is a podiatrist?
A podiatrist (or chiropodist) is a paramedic and a specialist in feet in relation to the entire body. A podiatrist gains his knowledge through a four year education on podiatry at a university of applied sciences. A podiatrist is the only foot specialist in the Netherlands who is protected by law. This is not the case for someone working as a podologist. Furthermore, a podologist does not fall under the strict rules of the BIG-register and does not get paramedical recognition. The BIG-register oversees all (foot)care in the Netherlands which ensures we can guarantee that we work under strict rules concerning health, hygiene and schooling. Since the first of august 2011 (after the training Direct Accessible Podotherapy of the NVvP) you can directly go to one of our podiatrists without a referral from your doctor or a specialist. If you do have a referral, please bring this with you to the appointment with the podiatrist.
